Skåne (also known as Scania) is the most densely populated region of Sweden. It is part of the Öresund region along with Copenhagen, Denmark, which forms the largest growth area in Scandinavia. Malmö Airport is an important element of the Öresund region’s infrastructure in meeting the need for air transport of both passengers and cargo. Skåne is also an attractive region for international companies to locate their head offices. Among the reasons for this are the region’s numerous universities and its leading role in medicine, biotechnology (“Medicon Valley”), information technology (IT) and food processing. At the centre of this region is Malmö Airport − a large workplace, where a total of some 1,500 people work for about fifty companies.

Because of the well-developed infrastructure, it is easy to get to Malmö Airport from both Sweden and Denmark, whether by car or public transport. From the airport, it takes 30 minutes to get to the city of Malmö and 50 minutes to central Copenhagen. The motorway to Malmö Airport ties together Sweden with Denmark via the Öresund Bridge.
Malmö Airport’s catchment area covers most of southern Sweden, where 40 per cent of the country’s population lives. More than 1.4 million people live in our Swedish catchment area. The Öresund Bridge together with good public transport have contributed greatly to the expansion of our catchment area in Denmark. A total of 3.6 million people live in our catchment area.
During 2009, 1.54 million passengers chose to fly to and from Malmö Airport and the Öresund region.
