Malmö Airport exists because people choose to fly to various destinations for holidays, to visit those who are near and dear or to hold business meetings. During 2009, more than 1.5 million passengers passed through the airport. The operations of Malmö Airport are reviewed from an environmental standpoint and are regulated by permit decisions. For example, such decisions specify how many aircraft movements − take-offs and landings − may occur at the airport and what approach and take-off paths the aircraft must use.
Malmö Airport works in various fields to protect the environment and its immediate surroundings. Examples are measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, lower noise levels, protect waterways and soil around the airport and lower energy consumption.
Environmental work – more than meeting permit conditions
There are numerous environmental conditions that Malmö Airport must continuously meet in order to be granted a permit to operate as an airport. But the environmental work is not only a matter of meeting these conditions. It is also all about taking serious steps to protect the environment and be a good neighbour.
Malmö Airport − which is owned, operated and developed by Swedavia − is continuously working to reduce its environmental impact. We attach great importance to working with environmental issues in a structured, systematic way. Our environmental management system plays a pivotal role in our work and we are environmentally certified according to the ISO 14001 international standard.
All electricity at Malmö Airport is environmentally friendly, and chemicals from aircraft and runway de-icing are recycled. Since the autumn of 2007, all space heating of our buildings has occurred by means of renewable energy.
Since 2007, Swedavia, former the LFV Group, has been a climate neutral company. This means that we offset the fossil carbon dioxide emissions from our own operations that we are not able to eliminate, by financing projects that contribute to a corresponding reduction in emissions.
