Environmental permit

Environmental permit
In order to operate an airport, it is necessary to have a permit for the operation itself and the facility too. The body issuing the permit is the Environmental Court. Operations at Malmö Airport are environmentally audited and governed by permit decision.

Work is currently under way on a new permit application for Malmö Airport. Malmö Airport has been running for 35 years and the environmental permit that relates to current operations was issued in 1997 in accordance with then-current environmental legislation. Over the years, the airport’s operations have developed, the facility has been modernised and changed in many respects. What is more, the government has decided that older permits are to be re-examined to ensure that the terms and conditions relating to environmentally hazardous operations are duly adapted to the requirements of the Environmental Code.

The application that Swedavia will submit relates to the same number of flights as in the current permit. The landing runway will remain the same.

The change for which Swedavia is applying relates primarily to refurbishment and additional construction of facilities within the airport area as well as redistribution of aircraft traffic during each 24-hour period.

Swedavia Malmö Airport was involved in in-depth consultations with the county administrative boards, municipalities, organisations, central government authorities and general public in 2009-2010 and intends to submit its application in 2011.
