2011 a strong year for Malmö Airport

2012-01-10

In 2011, more than 1.9 million passengers used Malmö Airport, a 22 percent increase over the previous year. Domestic travel rose by 25 percent and international flights by 17 percent.

The 25 percent increase in domestic traffic in 2011 compared with the previous year means that more than 1.2 million domestic passengers flew to and from Malmö Airport. Overseas traffic increased by 17 percent, which means that almost 750,000 passengers used Malmö Airport for overseas travel last year.

2011 saw 348,000 more passengers use Malmö Airport compared with 2010. The significant increase in passengers makes 2011 the third best year ever for the airport in terms of the number of passengers. The record was set in 2001 when just over 2 million passengers flew to and from Malmö Airport.

“Several new routes to overseas destinations and a strong year for domestic traffic brought a record increase in the number of passengers. This increase is entirely in line with Swedavia’s strategy for increased availability to, from and within Sweden,” says Peter Weinhandl, Airport Director at Malmö Airport.

In 2012 the airport will invest more than 100 million kronor in its operations, including runway resurfacing, car park improvements to further enhance traffic flow at the airport, and the construction of a new glycol handling system.
