Non-stop connections with Poland bring more tourists to Skåne

2009-05-19

For almost five years, Wizz Air has been flying non-stop between Malmö Airport and Poland. There is a clear relationship between supply and demand. More non-stop air connections with Poland have brought more Polish tourists to Skåne.

“Overnight stays by hotel guests from Poland have sharply increased since Wizz Air began serving routes between Poland and Skåne. Compared to 2003, such overnight stays have increased by 63 per cent, and we are very pleased about that,” says Pia Jönsson Rajgård, Managing Director of Tourism in Skåne.

On September 15, 2004, Wizz Air landed at Malmö Airport for the first time. Today the airline offers flights between Malmö and Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice/Krakow as well as Budapest (Hungary). This means that more and more tourists from Poland and elsewhere are choosing to fly to Skåne on Wizz Air’s low fare routes. On July 12 a route to Prague will also begin service, since the airline is opening its eleventh European base in the Czech Republic.

“We are very happy that Wizz Air serves our airport and we are hoping for more routes, since Wizz Air is continuing to expand rapidly in the European market,” says Cecilia Hagert, Head of Marketing at Malmö Airport.

Wizz Air’s maiden flight took off on May 19, 2004 from Katowice Airport. Since then the airline has flown more than 18 million passengers in Europe. Wizz Air celebrated its fifth anniversary of service on May 19, 2009. During the nearly five years that the airline has served Malmö Airport, more than half a million passengers have flown Wizz Air to and from Skåne.

The airline was established in 2004, just as a number of countries in Central and Eastern Europe joined the European Union and a huge new market opened up to the region’s airlines. Wizz Air has 10 operational bases in Europe:  Katowice, Warsaw, Gdansk and Poznan (Poland); Budapest (Hungary), Sofia (Bulgaria); Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timisoara (Romania); and Kiev (Ukraine). The airline flies 120 routes and uses Airbus A320 aircraft. Wizz Air will be expanding its fleet from 23 aircraft to 82 by 2014.
