Together with NAP, TNT will begin construction on a new 3,500 sq m cargo terminal. This is part of the Airport’s investment in expanding air cargo services and when all expansion plans are complete, in place and operational at year end 2008/2009, this new, modern cargo plant will cover an area of 8.000 sq m. There is a great need for efficient goods transportation services to and from the Öresund region. In 2007 air cargo volumes at the Airport increased by 13% much of this attributable to three major players: TNT, UPS and Transmile.
Globally, air cargo transports are increasing at a rate of 10-12% a year and the prognosis for Malmö Airport is that cargo volumes will increase by a similar amount, says Bertil Månsson, Head of Cargo Operations. Malmö Airport is fast becoming a hub for cargo services between Scandinavia and the rest of the world with the result that this area of the Airport’s operations is also gaining importance.
Once fully completed the cargo area will comprise of 30,000 sq m, various different types of companies and a work force of several hundred people. This area will not only include a cargo terminal but also parking space for aircraft, access roads as well as up-graded technological landing aids.
