LFV was the first major Swedish company that chose to become climate-neutral. Swedavia continues this tradition and provides services that can be produced without any adverse impact on the environment.
A climate-neutral company runs its operations without adding to global climate change. Swedavia is also working methodically to calculate its emissions and gradually implement measures in its own operations. The remaining emissions are offset through international climate projects, which offset equal amounts of carbon dioxide. As a result, the company’s operations are run without any adverse impact on the climate.
Through the purchase of certified carbon offsets, a price is set on the company’s emissions of greenhouse gases. Measures that reduce these emissions will result in lower costs given that fewer certificates will need to be purchased. Greater focus will be placed, for instance, on energy-efficiency measures because these are now more profitable than before.
Swedavia wants to run its operations with a minimal impact on the environment, and our vision in the long run is an economy and society with no climate-change impact. Swedavia has shown through practical measures that climate work is profitable even in the short term.
An important part of Swedavia’s work is identifying the company’s emissions of greenhouse gases and implementing measures to reduce these. A number of concrete measures have already been carried out to reduce the environmental impact of operations. Examples of such measures are: purchasing green electricity, choosing environmentally clean cars when purchasing or leasing, and shifting from oil to biofuels for heating terminals.
In 2009, emissions were 9,600 tonnes*. This figure for Swedavia’s climate neutrality includes operations that Swedavia has legal authority over, for instance Göteborg City Airport. Emissions thus fell by 3 per cent compared to 2008. The figure does not include employee travel or passenger transport to and from the airports because Swedavia does not have legal authority over these. The remaining portion of emissions is carbon-offset by purchasing emission reduction certificates.
Swedavia is a pioneer in Sweden and has become a best practice example for the rest of the world.
