Stockholm-Arlanda was ranked in first place among European airports with cargo volume of up to 500,000 tonnes per year. Other Nordic airports are in the same category, with Copenhagen capturing sixth place, Oslo sixteenth and Helsinki nineteenth.
“Despite the economic downturn, we have managed to maintain the high standard and quality of Stockholm-Arlanda’s air cargo operations. Our investment in Cargo City is paying off and we are continuing to improve our cargo infrastructure in order to be even better equipped for the next economic expansion,” says Karsten Bjärbo, LFV, Manager Cargo Operations.
In 2008 Stockholm-Arlanda was the Nordic airport that increased its air cargo volume the most, in a market where most airports had negative growth. During the first half, cargo showed a 15 per cent increase. Then came a slump in the late autumn and a decline of 18 per cent in December. Total cargo volume at Stockholm-Arlanda rose by five per cent last year.
“We foresee no positive figures in 2009. But we are likely to be the first to see an economic turnaround, since the air cargo industry is a good indicator of how healthy the export industry is,” says Björn Ragnebrink, LFV, Director Business Development, Air Cargo.
The Air Cargo Excellence Survey is an annual survey by Air Cargo World magazine, in which airlines themselves rate airports. All air carriers that fly cargo participate, not just pure air cargo carriers.
The airports included in the Air Cargo World survey are ranked on the basis of four criteria and an overall rating. The criteria on which airlines rated the airports were performance (service), value (price levels), facilities (infrastructure) and regulatory operations (customs and security).
