Ash cloud cuts travel in April

2010-05-06

During April, the total number of passengers at Swedavia’s airports was 1.7 million, which is a decline of 25 per cent compared to the same month in 2009. International travel fell by 19 per cent to one million passengers while domestic travel fell by 32 per cent to 0.7 million. The decrease is due to the ban on flights that affected Sweden and large parts of Europe after the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

“The first part of April showed a strong trend, but the ban on flights resulting from the ash cloud April 15-21 caused a drop in passengers of about 600,000 at Swedavia’s airports. Even after traffic started up again, there were a number of delays and cancelled departures,” says Mats Sigurdson, Director of Aviation Marketing at Swedavia.

In all, for the period January-April 2010, the number of passengers at Swedavia’s airports fell by four per cent compared to the same period in 2009. The number of international passengers decreased by three per cent and the number of domestic passengers decreased by four per cent.

All of Swedavia’s airports showed a drop in the number of passengers in April. Stockholm-Bromma fell by 27 per cent and Stockholm-Arlanda fell by 23 per cent. Göteborg Landvetter decreased by 21 per cent.

“We saw the smallest decline in intercontinental travel, due in part to less sensitivity to delays and traffic re-routings but also because Sweden was able to take on more departures when Kastrup (Copenhagen) was kept closed,” Mr Sigurdson notes.

The number of landings for scheduled and charter traffic decreased by 22 per cent in April compared to the same month in 2009. International landings fell by 16 per cent and domestic landings fell by 27 per cent. Accumulated over the period January-April 2010, the number of landings was 59,500, which is a drop of eight per cent.
